The LSU School of Music offers its students one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic programs, with degrees ranging from bachelor’s through doctorate and countless opportunities both on campus and in the community. As one of the designated Foundations of Excellence at LSU, faculty and students are nationally and internationally acclaimed as performers, educators, and researchers. Technology and facilities enable students to pursue their interests limited only by their imagination. We are rich in history, inspired by excellence, and arts leaders of the century. The music programs at LSU have been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1931.
BACHELOR OF MUSIC
The BM degree features concentrations in Composition and Performance. Performance specializations include Brass, Strings, Percussion, Piano, Piano Pedagogy, Voice, and Woodwinds.
BACHELOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION
The BME degree has concentrations in both Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. The degree is designed to prepare students for jobs as music education teachers in K-12 grades.
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC
The BA in Music degree is a liberal arts program for students who wish to include other disciplines in their course of study. All B.A. students take a minor degree outside of music. In the past, students have used this program to focus on Jazz Studies, Music & Digital Media, and Business.
MASTER OF MUSIC
The MM is a post-baccalaureate degree for students wishing to explore more deeply into their area or instrument of study. Specializations include Collaborative Keyboard, Composition, Conducting, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Music Theory, Musicology, Performance, and Piano Pedagogy.
DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS
The DMA is a terminal degree for students wishing to specialize in conducting or performance. Conducting students may focus on orchestral, vocal or wind conducting. Performance students can focus on strings, winds, brass, percussion and piano performance.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MUSIC
The PhD is a terminal degree for students wishing to specialize in Composition, Experimental Music & Digital Media, Music Education, Music Theory, and Musicology.
