Venues and Facilities

The College of Music & Dramatic Arts utilizes a variety of venues for all types of events, each providing an unique experience for students, visitors and patrons.

In September 2009, the Music & Dramatic Arts Building celebrated its grand reopening, following a 4.5 year, $22 million renovation that included not only restoration of classrooms and practice space, but performance venues such as the historic Claude L. Shaver Theatre and creation of a new black-box Studio Theatre. These improvements have allowed the CMDA to keep pace and even surpass other regional institutions in terms of facilities, programs offered, and involvement in the community.

Shaver Theatre

The Claude L. Shaver Theatre is housed in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building. This facility hosts many LSU Theatre and LSU Opera performances, and seats up to 350 people.

The School of Music Recital Hall (SOM)

The Recital Hall is located in the School of Music Building at the corner of Dalrymple Drive and Infirmary Road. Events at the Recital Hall, which seats approximately 250 guests, are sometimes free and open to the public.

Union Theater

The Union Theater seats more than 1,200 guests. School of Music performances held in the Union Theater are usually ticketed events.

Old Band Hall

The historic Old Band Hall, built in 1959, is situated on the west side of the Music & Dramatic Arts Building, next to the Greek Theater and Dalrymple Drive. It provides additional rehearsal space for School of Music ensembles and houses the main offices of the Department of Bands.

Tiger Band Hall

The Tiger Band Hall complex is located north of the School of Music and MDA buildings, along Aster Street. Featuring extensive automation and reconfigurable acoustics, this state-of-the-art, 17,740-square-foot facility is used for rehearsals by the Tiger Marching Band and the LSU School of Music’s entire band area, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band. Recitals, medium-sized concert performances, workshops and other special events are occasionally held here.

University United Methodist Church (UUMC)

The University United Methodist Church (UUMC) is one of the five off campus venues that frequently hosts concerts by the LSU School of Music. The facility is located just outside campus at 3350 Dalrymple Drive.

Located in downtown Baton Rouge at 529 Convention Street, the First Baptist Church is another off-campus venue the School of Music frequently uses. Concerts held here may be ticketed.

St. Alban’s Chapel

St. Alban’s Chapel is located at the corner of Dalrymple Drive and Highland Road, on the edge of the LSU campus. It is situated across Highland Road from the Parade Grounds. Parking is available at the School of Music parking lot, or the Law School parking lot behind the church. Concerts held at St. Alban’s Chapel may be ticketed.
