Graduate Application Process

Students who wish to enroll in the LSU School of Music’s graduate program must be admissible to Louisiana State University Graduate School and successfully pass an audition with the School of Music. This process is conducted simultaneously.

Step 1

Apply to LSU online

  • Official transcripts from ALL institutions attended
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume/CV
  • Writing Sample(s)
  • International students must submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores (these exams are waived for those international student applicants who have already completed a degree (Bachelor or Masters) from an accredited university in the United States) 
Step 2
Complete the LSU School of Music Audition/Interview Form
(The audition form must be completed in one sitting)
Step 3

Submit all supplementary documents, if applicable

  • Portfolio/Compositions
  • Pre-screening recordings/videos
  • GRE scores: required for all DMA & PhD applicants,
    as well as all Music Theory and Musicology applicants
    .)

    • The ETS institution code for LSU Graduate School is 6373.

Important Deadlines

Graduate applicants should submit their application and pre-screening recordings (if applicable), by
December 1 to receive priority consideration for funding awards.  Late pre-screenings and applications will be considered if space is available.

All pre-screening recording MUST be a video and submitted via Acceptd.  All recorded auditions require a $30 system fee paid through Acceptd.

Applicants must complete their audition/interview by February 15.

Auditions/interviews are schedule by based on the applicants preferred date/means as indicated on their audition form and/or by invitation.

Live Auditions/Interviews

For all pre-screened areas, auditions will be scheduled by invitation only.

All others will be scheduled by the end of December.

The on-campus audition dates for Fall 2017 applicants are:

  • January 28, 2017
  • February 4, 2017
  • February 25, 2017

Alternative dates may be requested.  To make that request, please contact faculty directly.

Recorded Auditions

Live auditions are strongly encouraged. However, applicants that are unable to audition live may submit video recorded auditions. The recording MUST be a video and submitted via Acceptd.  All recorded auditions require a $30 system fee paid through Acceptd.

  • All live or recorded auditions must be completed or submitted by February 15.

International Students

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) or the Pearson’s Test of English (PTE) test scores are required of any student whose native language is not English. A TOEFL score of 550 on the paper based exam, 213 on the computer-based exam, or 79 on the internet-based exam or better is required for admission. The ETS institution code for LSU Graduate School is 6373.  A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is required for admission.  A minimum PTE score of 59 is required for admission.

The TOEFL exam is waived for those international student applicants who have already completed a degree (Bachelor or Masters) from an accredited university in the United States.
