LSU School of Music proudly announces Stephen Cleobury as LSU Visiting Fellow 2013-14

The Louisiana State University School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge and Conductor Laureate of the BBC Singers, as a Visiting Fellow in the upcoming academic year.

An internationally celebrated conductor and organist, Mr. Cleobury is associated with two of Britain’s most famous choirs and works with leading symphony orchestras and period instrument ensembles.

He is perhaps best recognized for leading the Choir of King’s in the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols sung during the Christmas season at the Chapel of King’s College and broadcast throughout the world by the British Broadcasting Company.

“We’re very pleased to have Mr. Cleobury join us as a visiting fellow,” Stephen David Beck, director of the School of Music. His residency underscores the long-standing choral traditions at LSU and will further our goal of maintaining LSU’s choral program as one of the country’s finest. His expertise will be a great benefit to our students and the choral program as a whole.”

Dr. John Dickson, the Stephanie L. Barineau Professor of Choral Music, Director of Choral Studies, is well acquainted with Mr. Cleobury’s artistry at King’s, having served as Visiting Fellow of Wolfson College during two Cambridge sabbaticals.

“Mr. Cleobury brings an unparalleled wealth of knowledge and experience in sacred and period music with him to the students and choirs at LSU’s School of Music,” said Dickson who also serves as chairman of the Division of Ensembles and Conducting at LSU.

When contemplating a sacred music component for LSU, Dickson shared his idea of two, weeklong residencies or sacred music symposia with Mr. Cleobury and Mr. Cleobury immediately accepted the invitation to serve as an artist in residence at LSU.

When asked about his choice of Mr. Cleobury, Dickson said, “Once I knew I had support for a sacred music component at LSU, Stephen immediately came to mind. In addition to his outstanding artistry as an organist and conductor, I can think of no one who has championed the art of sacred music more than Stephen Cleobury.”
