Loraine Sims is an Associate Professor and the Vocal Area Coordinator at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she teaches Voice and Vocal Pedagogy. She has achieved critical-acclaim for her “vibrant, bell-like soprano” as well as her “warm intimacy, engaging passion and casual artistry.” She is an active recitalist whose voice has been described as “remarkably versatile, ranging from delicate lyricism to dramatic power” and her repertoire includes a broad range of songs and arias from the Baroque through Contemporary periods as well as a variety of selections from the American Musical Theater tradition.
Upcoming performances include an invitation to present “Comedy in Song: Humorous Art Songs in English” at the 2016 National NATS Conference to be held in Chicago in July. Recent performances have included appearances for the 2015 Song Collaborators Consortia Art Song Festival in Amarillo, TX and as an Invited Performer at the 2014 National Opera Association Conference on the Golden Age of Broadway Cabaret Program in New York. She recently appeared in the role of the “Baroness Angelina” in the World Premiere of a One-Act Opera by Dinos Constantinides, Rosanna, which was commissioned for the State LMTA Conference in Shreveport, LA. Other performances include Guest Artist Recitals at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, for the Musical Arts Concert Series at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK, and appearances as Soprano Soloist with the Louisiana Sinfonietta, the LSU Symphony Orchestra, and the Southeast Kansas Symphony.
Professional activities include being an invited presenter at the 2016 Greater Houston NATS Chapter meeting, the 2014 Chicago Chapter of NATS, and the 2012 National NATS Conference in Orlando with her session, “Training the Terrible Tongue! Other presentations include “Teaching Lucas: A Transgender Student’s Vocal Journey from Soprano to Tenor” at the 2016 NOA/NATS conference in Indianapolis, the 2016 National MTNA Conference in San Antonio, the 2016 National NATS Convention in Chicago, and the 2016 Southern Region CMS Conference in Birmingham, “Using Technology in the Voice Studio” at the 2015 Louisiana NATS Workshop, “Practical Applications for the Spectrogram in the Voice Studio: A Demonstration,” at the 2007 CMS/ATMI Conference, the 2007 Southern Regional Conference of NATS, and at the 2011 Voice Symposium at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Sims is the past Southern Regional Governor of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and is also a member of the National Opera Association (NOA) and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). She enjoys giving master classes which have included those at the 2011 Voice Symposium at the University of Southern Mississippi, the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Ireland, Minnesota State University, Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota), Drury University (Missouri), Southeastern Oklahoma State University, the University of Alabama, East Carolina University, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Her students have been winners in national and regional competitions, are singing in regional opera and concert venues, and are teaching in schools and universities in the US.
